Sudan Events – Follow-ups
The UN General Assembly unanimously elected Ammar Mohamed Mahmoud, a diplomat at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Sudan to the UN in New York, to the position of Vice-Chair of the Sixth Committee of the General Assembly during the 70th session of the General Assembly, where he will represent the African continent in the office of the committee that is responsible for discussing issues related to international law.
This election highlights the international community’s recognition of Sudan’s active presence in the work of the UN, and its efforts to promote the rule of law at the local, regional and international levels despite the delicate circumstances the country is going through. It also confirms the confidence that Sudanese diplomacy and its cadres enjoy on the international scene.
In addition to managing the meetings of the Legal Committee, the Vice-Chair of the Sixth Committee, along with its four other members representing the various continents of the world, sets the agenda and determines the priorities of the General Assembly meetings related to legal affairs.
The Committee’s agenda includes issues including discussion of measures aimed at eliminating international terrorism, the role of the rule of law at the national and international levels, the scope of application of the principle of universal jurisdiction, and the responsibility of States for internationally illegal acts.
