UN: Obstacles deprived more than a million Sudanese of Aids in May
Sudan Events – Follow-ups
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Sudan (OCHA) said on Saturday that obstacles to providing relief deprived 1.1 million people of assistance in Khartoum, Darfur, Kordofan and Gezira during the month of May.
The OCHA office said in a statement according to “Sudan Tribune” that “in May, approximately 302,000 people in Kordofan, 608,000 people in Darfur, 100,000 people in Gezira and 98,000 in Khartoum were deprived of assistance.”
The office attributed the deprivation to the refusal of travel permits for humanitarian workers and the restriction of transit movements through the Tina crossing that connects the regions of northern Chad to North Darfur State, in addition to the lack of security and obstacles from the parties to the conflict.
The office spoke about the deprivation of approximately 1.7 million people of aid in Darfur, Khartoum and Kordofan as of last April.
OCHA reported 10 incidents impacting humanitarian operations between March and May 2024, including three violent attacks on humanitarian workers, six instances of interference in the implementation of humanitarian activities and one bureaucratic impediment.
The office revealed an improvement in the visa approval situation during May, with 100 out of 120 visas approved.
