Guterres Warns of Devastating Consequences of Clashes in El Fasher
Sudan Events – Reports
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep concern about the developments in the city of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, where reports have emerged of intense fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces, the Rapid Support Forces militia, and elements of the armed struggle movements.
In a statement by his deputy spokesperson, Farhan Haq, Guterres said these clashes have devastating consequences for the civilian population and that the fighting is likely to exacerbate the humanitarian needs in El Fasher and its surroundings.
Guterres called on all parties to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians, ensure safe passage, and facilitate rapid and unhindered humanitarian access.
He renewed his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a permanent ceasefire. He also urged the parties to return to political dialogue as the only way to reach a negotiated settlement.
Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting international mediation efforts and working with all relevant stakeholders to help end the war.
