Gash River Overflows, Authorities Issue Warnings
Sudan Events – Follow-ups
An increase in the water levels of the Gash River early Friday morning caused a “breach” in the “Maqawda and Darman” areas in the south of the state.
The governor of Kassala, Major General (Rtd.) Al-Sadiq Al-Azraq, inspected the rising levels of the Gash River following rainfall in the Eritrean highlands on Friday.
The governor reassured the residents of Kassala City that the river levels are currently stable after decreasing to about 260 mm. He also noted that the risk remains due to the high rainfall levels in Eritrea, which threaten all villages around the Gash River. The governor mentioned that the state’s authorities have mobilized all their resources to intervene in case of any emergencies, indicating that the concerned authorities have sent urgent relief in the form of food baskets and tarpaulins to the residents of “Maqawda,” where around 250 families have been affected by the river’s flood, and have been relocated to higher ground.
For his part, the director of civil defense in the state, Brigadier General Badawi Mohammed Hussein, urged residents of the northern localities of the state to take precautions, stay away from the Gash River and its tributaries to protect lives and property, and avoid swimming in the river’s waters.
