The Chairman of the Sovereign Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Army, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, revealed details of the government’s proposal regarding the implementation of the provisions of the Jeddah Agreement signed on May 11 of last year.
In response to a question from “Al-Shorouk” about the mechanisms for implementing the Jeddah Agreement presented by Sudan and the parties participating in the monitoring mechanism, Al-Burhan said that the government presented its proposal and vision regarding the implementation of the agreement, with a specific program and timetable that was handed over to Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and the U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello. This includes the withdrawal of the Rapid Support Forces from the capital, Khartoum, and cities in the Darfur region and Al Jazirah State.
In response to Al-Shorouk’s question during a meeting with several Egyptian and Sudanese journalists in his office in Port Sudan on Saturday, Al-Burhan said that the Sudanese government’s proposal specified the on-ground monitoring mechanism for implementing the agreement, which would consist of some neighboring countries. However, the rebels objected to the inclusion of some countries such as Egypt and South Sudan. He added: “We also determined the number of forces and their deployment areas.”
The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council affirmed: “We will not engage in new negotiations without the commitment to implementing the agreement.”
Al-Burhan also thanked the Egyptian political leadership for supporting Khartoum in the current crisis and appreciated President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi’s constant concern for Sudan and its situation. He also thanked the Egyptian people for their support of the Sudanese people and for hosting them during this ordeal.
For its part, the Transitional Sovereign Council’s media office stated that “Al-Burhan briefed the Sudanese-Egyptian media delegation on the developments in Sudan in light of the rebellion led by the terrorist Rapid Support Forces militia against the state and its institutions, affirming the armed forces’ ability to defeat and eliminate the rebellion.”
During his meeting with the Sudanese-Egyptian media delegation in his office, Al-Burhan stated that “those who want to stop the war should talk to the rebels who are attacking civilians in their areas, affirming that the violations committed by the militia against the Sudanese people are unprecedented in all wars worldwide.”
Al-Burhan pointed to the polarization practiced by the Al-Daglo militia among tribes, aiming to create social divisions, explaining that the government’s position on any negotiations is clear through the vision presented to the mediators.
He stated that efforts are underway to form a government to manage the transitional period, expressing his gratitude to Egypt’s leadership and people for standing by Sudan and hosting Sudanese refugees.
