Relief Organizations: International Response to Sudan’s Famine is Insufficient
Sudan Events – Reports
Three major relief organizations operating in Sudan warned on Tuesday of a hunger crisis of “historic” proportions, where many families have been forced to eat tree leaves and insects, condemning the “indifference” shown by the international community.
In a joint statement, the Norwegian Refugee Council, the Danish Refugee Council, and Mercy Corps, which are involved in humanitarian relief in Sudan, said, “Sudan is experiencing an unprecedented hunger crisis at historic levels. Yet, the deafening silence persists, and people are dying of hunger every day.”
The organizations added, “We urgently call on the international community to address the massive hunger crisis inside the country,” noting that “international attention and action are inadequate and severely delayed, and so far, the humanitarian response plan has only been 41 percent funded.”
