Sudan Events – Agencies
Australian humanitarian agencies on Wednesday called on their government to increase support for Sudan after food security experts warned that 2.5 million people could die of hunger before the end of this year.
The organizations, including Act for Peace, Caritas Australia, CARE International, Australian Council for International Development, Humanitarian Leadership Center, ActionAid, Oxfam, and Save the Children, sent a letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister for International Development.
In a joint statement, the organizations said: “Food security experts have warned that 2.5 million Sudanese could die of hunger before the end of the year, and we urge Australia to increase its efforts and take more decisive action to address Sudan’s crisis and the ongoing conflict.”
The letter called on the Australian government to increase its diplomatic engagement, alongside similarly aligned countries, to ensure a permanent ceasefire and a political solution. It also urged the government to provide immediate new funding for humanitarian responses.
The statement added, “Australian humanitarian organizations continue to operate in Sudan and are ready to expand and strengthen vital relief efforts.”
