Czech player Karolina Muchova said she will take a lot from her competition in New York despite losing in the semi-finals of the US Open on Thursday, having successfully returned to top form after nearly a year out due to injury.
Muchova had a strong 2023 season, reaching the French Open final but suffering a wrist injury during her semi-final run in New York, leading to surgery in February.
She returned to professional tournaments in June and reached the US Open after playing only a few matches, but showed no signs of rust, not losing a single set until her defeat to American Jessica Pegula 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Thursday.
Muchova said: “Reaching the semi-finals and feeling that I can play well and compete against the best and beat them is something I wasn’t sure when I’d get back to. I feel good now. I’m healthy and can play more tournaments this year. That’s the most important thing, really.”
Muchova defeated former champion Naomi Osaka in the second round and knocked out fifth-seed Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round, thanks to her strong serve.
However, Pegula was able to read her game on Arthur Ashe Stadium, turning things around after a disastrous opening set.
Speaking to reporters, Muchova said: “I mean, it’s good to get through these matches, gain experience from them, and learn for the next one. I can improve and get better.”
