Completion of the White Valley Dam rehabilitation in Khartoum
Sudan Events – Reports
Governor of Khartoum, Ahmed Othman Hamza, affirmed that despite the war conditions, the state of Khartoum continues to focus on infrastructure projects related to development, including water harvesting projects.
On Saturday, the governor oversaw the completion of the first phase of rehabilitating the White Valley Dam in Northern Rural Karari, in the presence of Sar Al-Khatim Fadl Al-Mawla, Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation, Mokhtar Omar Saber, Director of the Roads and Bridges Authority, and Somaya Hussein, Director of the Northern Rural Unit.
After scattering seeds along the edges of the dam, the governor stated that this step reflects the state’s interest in the developmental aspects of infrastructure projects, which provide productive advantages and contribute to the stability of local communities. He emphasized that dams are strategic projects, especially considering climate change and heavy rainfall, encouraging serious efforts to make the most of rainwater for productive projects and to promote investment in this field.
For his part, the Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Irrigation explained that the dam’s storage capacity is 1.5 million cubic meters and that it is one of 13 dams in Khartoum State working within the water harvesting project. He noted that this year’s rainy season would increase the storage capacity of the dams, which are used for irrigation and agriculture in the summer, as well as for increasing groundwater reserves.
The Director of the Roads and Bridges Authority stated that the dam rehabilitation is part of a plan to protect northern rural villages and the national road from the risks of floods, along with other developmental benefits. He added that the repairs will ensure the dam operates efficiently for the next ten years.
In the same context, Dr. Ahmed Mousa Siam, Director of the company responsible for the rehabilitation, stated that the work done has provided permanent solutions to the problems the dam was facing. After the repair of the dam’s body, drains, and main gate, it is now in much better condition than before.
