Al-Burhan: Committed to facilitating WHO’s work in Sudan

On Sunday, the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, met with WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom.
Health Minister Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim stated in a press briefing that the WHO Director-General’s visit to Sudan was packed with activities, including visits to several healthcare institutions, shelters, and the Humanitarian Aid Commission. He also met with numerous state officials, focusing on WHO’s commitment to continuing its work in supporting Sudan and its healthcare institutions and the necessity of opening border crossings with neighboring countries to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected by the war.
The WHO Director-General promised to increase the support allocated to Sudan.
Dr. Tedros described his meeting with the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council as fruitful and constructive, saying that he briefed Al-Burhan on the outcomes of his two-day visit to Sudan, during which he assessed the needs of the Sudanese health sector.
He thanked the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council for the cooperation of the Sudanese government with international organizations by agreeing to open humanitarian corridors to facilitate aid deliveries.
Tedros also said that General Al-Burhan reaffirmed Sudan’s commitment to facilitating WHO’s work in the country to support the healthcare sector. He further confirmed the government’s readiness to use Merowe Airport and other airports to help deliver the necessary aid to citizens, noting that Merowe is the closest route to deliver aid to Darfur.
