United Nations: The World is at a Crossroads
Sudan Events – Agencies
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned yesterday (Monday) that the world is at a “crossroads” and, if it doesn’t wake up, is heading towards a “bleak future” in the face of escalating conflicts, oppression, and media disinformation.
Speaking at the opening of the 57th session of the UN Human Rights Council, Türk said, “We can either continue on the current path, accepting this treacherous new normal, sleepwalking into a bleak future, or we can wake up and turn things around for the betterment of humanity and the planet.”
In a world rife with conflicts, including the wars in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan, Türk emphasized that “nations must not and cannot accept the blatant disregard for international law.”
He warned that the world is currently accepting “many red lines being crossed.” He cautioned against accepting what is increasingly seen as the “new normal” in the world, stressing that there “cannot be an endless violent military escalation with increasingly brutal war tactics, control, and repression.”
