Michel Barnier, the former European Union chief Brexit negotiator who was appointed as France’s Prime Minister on September 5, pledged on Wednesday to form a government “next week,” according to AFP. Barnier, 73, appointed by President Emmanuel Macron after the legislative elections failed to secure a majority in the National Assembly, stated: “We will carry out our mission systematically and seriously.” Barnier, a figure from the traditional French right, told the press: “I have met most of the leaders of the blocs, and I continue my efforts. I have visited the deputies and senators to listen to them as well.” The newly appointed prime minister, tasked with forming a coalition that includes left-wing, centrist, and right-wing figures in his government team, added: “We will form the government next week.” The French presidency confirmed that Barnier was chosen for his ability to “unite to the greatest extent” in a fragmented political scene. A few days after his appointment, Barnier faced demonstrations, particularly in Paris, called by the far-left party “La France Insoumise.”
