Sudan Events – Agencies
The Syrian presidency announced that Syrian President Bashar Assad discussed today (Monday) in Damascus with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu, topics related to international and regional security.
The Syrian presidency said in a statement received by the German News Agency, that “President Assad received Shoigu and discussed with him a range of issues related to international and regional security, as well as bilateral relations between Syria and Russia, and prospects for strengthening them in the interest of both countries.”
This is Shoigu’s first visit to Damascus after assuming his new position. He had previously visited Damascus several times during his tenure as Russia’s defense minister, with his last visit in mid-February last year.
Observers in Damascus believe that Shoigu’s meeting with the Syrian president comes as part of Russian efforts to hold meetings between Syrian and Turkish officials to reach a settlement between the two governments.
Shoigu’s visit to Damascus coincides with statements by Russian officials about working to revive Syria’s relations with its Arab neighbors.
