Sebastian Coe, the former Olympic champion in the 1500m race and current President of World Athletics, has emerged as one of seven candidates, revealed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday, who will vie to replace Germany’s Thomas Bach as IOC president in March.
Bach was first elected for an eight-year term in 2013, succeeding Belgium’s Jacques Rogge, and was re-elected for four more years in 2021. At 70 years old, Bach announced after the successful conclusion of the Paris Olympics in August that he would not seek a third term, stating, “New times call for new leaders.”
The seven candidates will present their programs to IOC members at the start of the new year, with the transition of leadership set to take place in June after the elections during the 143rd General Assembly, scheduled for March 18-21 in Athens.
