Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atty said that during his talks with U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, he stressed the importance of not equating the Sudanese army with any other party when discussing negotiations between the warring parties.
Following his talks with Blinken in Cairo, the Egyptian foreign minister emphasized the need to strengthen the role of institutions and the state to preserve Sudan’s territorial integrity.
For his part, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken linked progress in Sudan toward bringing the two parties to the negotiating table to the cessation of the Rapid Support Forces’ attacks on the city of El Fasher in North Darfur.
Blinken said at a joint press conference with the Egyptian foreign minister that progress in the Sudan crisis is threatened by a new attack by the Rapid Support Forces on El Fasher.
He added that both sides of the conflict in Sudan need to come to the negotiating table to agree on implementing the agreements signed in Jeddah.
Blinken noted that next week will see diplomatic movement in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the next steps for the humanitarian situation and push for a cessation of hostilities, praising Egypt’s role in receiving hundreds of thousands of Sudanese refugees.
