Guterres: Ceasefire in Sudan is Urgent

Sudan Events – Agencies
UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed deep concern over reports of a major RSF attack on El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state in Sudan.
According to “UN News,” Guterres called on RSF leader Hemedti to act responsibly and immediately order a halt to the RSF’s offensive. A statement from the Secretary-General’s spokesperson noted that “it is incomprehensible that the warring parties repeatedly ignore calls to cease hostilities.”
The statement warned that further escalation could also risk spreading the conflict along ethnic lines across Darfur.
Guterres emphasized that a ceasefire is not only necessary but an urgent imperative, in El Fasher and all other conflict areas in Sudan. He stated that the humanitarian situation is already catastrophic, with hundreds of thousands of people in need of aid. The warring parties have clear obligations under international humanitarian law to protect civilians, “and attacks against civilians or civilian infrastructure must not be directed at them, and all possible precautions must be taken to avoid harming them.”
Guterres’ special envoy, Ramtan Lamamra, continues efforts to promote peace and stands ready to support genuine efforts to halt the violence and move toward peace.
The UN statement affirmed that humanitarian organizations are poised to rapidly scale up assistance in El Fasher and other affected regions across Sudan.
