Death Penalty for 18 Defendants in the Merowe Airport Attack Case

A court in Dongola, presided over by Court of Appeals Judge Ayman Saleh, sentenced 18 defendants to death by hanging on Sunday and ordered the confiscation of their funds in connection with the attack on Merowe Airport on April 15, 2024. The court convicted the defendants under several articles of the criminal code, including participation and assistance in undermining the country’s constitutional system, endangering its independence and unity, waging war against the state, and committing crimes against humanity, as well as public property looting and destruction. This is the first case filed by the prosecution after the rebellion started on April 15, 2023. The prosecution was led by a team of public prosecutors headed by Chief Prosecutor Qutbi Haidar, with Senior Prosecutor Dr. Mohamed Osman Ahmed and First Prosecutor Dr. Othman Badi.
