Sudan Events – Reports
The European Union has condemned in the strongest terms the dramatic escalation of fighting in El Fasher, launched by the Rapid Support Forces against the Sudanese Armed Forces. The EU High Representative stated in a statement that the consequences would reach a point of no return for the thousands of innocent civilians trapped in crossfire, especially those in Zamzam camp, Sudan’s largest internally displaced persons (IDP) camp. He reminded all parties of their obligations under UN Security Council Resolution 2736, demanding that the Rapid Support Forces cease the siege and immediately de-escalate the fighting in El Fasher. The statement called on the warring parties, their allied militias, and regional backers to comply with international humanitarian law, protect civilians from conflict, provide unhindered humanitarian access, and allow civilians to move in and out of Zamzam camp. The EU urged Rapid Support Forces leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and Sudanese Armed Forces Commander General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan to negotiate for a peaceful solution to the conflict. The EU reiterated its call for those fueling the war, especially regional and international backers, to stop their support. The statement concluded that the EU would not stand by and witness another genocide, committing to working with international accountability mechanisms to hold perpetrators of serious human rights violations accountable. The EU also expressed readiness to consider additional sanctions, including against those in leadership positions.
