Iraq’s top Shiite cleric, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, described Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah on Saturday as “a leadership model rarely seen in recent decades.” Nasrallah was killed in the “tragic massacre committed” by Israel in southern Beirut.
In a statement issued by his office, Sistani said: “The great martyr was a leadership model rarely seen in recent decades. He played a distinguished role in the victory over Israeli occupation by liberating Lebanese lands and supported Iraqis with all he could in freeing their country from Daesh terrorists.”
Israel killed Nasrallah in a major airstrike on Beirut, dealing a severe blow to the Iran-backed group as it faces an escalating Israeli assault. On Saturday, the Israeli army confirmed it had killed Nasrallah in a raid targeting Hezbollah’s central command in southern Beirut. Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah’s death without providing further details.
