Sudan Events – Reports
US Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, began a visit to Nairobi and Addis Ababa on Sunday to continue diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the conflict in Sudan.
The envoy will meet with Sudanese refugees and civil leaders to discuss restoring the democratic path.
Following the diplomatic momentum gained during the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly, the Special Envoy will meet with officials from the African Union and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). He will also engage with Sudanese civil society leaders and international NGOs focused on humanitarian support and the protection of civilians.
According to the US State Department, the envoy will continue his efforts to strengthen an inclusive process for Sudan’s transition to civilian governance. These consultations will also support American diplomatic efforts to pressure the RSF and the Sudanese army to agree on humanitarian truces, leading to a comprehensive cessation of hostilities and expanded humanitarian access.
The State Department’s statement added, “The United States stands with the Sudanese people in their aspirations for peace, freedom, and justice. We call on the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF to end the violence, remove all barriers to addressing humanitarian needs, famine conditions, and gender-based violence, and to respect the laws of war regarding civilian protection.”
