On Monday, Chairman of the Sovereign Council and Army Commander General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan received a written message from Djibouti’s President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh regarding bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to support and enhance them.
This came during Burhan’s meeting on Monday with Djibouti’s Presidential Envoy and Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Youssef, in the presence of Acting Foreign Minister Ambassador Hussein Awad.
Ambassador Awad stated that the meeting addressed Sudan-Djibouti relations on regional and international levels, and discussed the possibility of Sudan’s return to IGAD. According to the foreign minister, Djibouti’s president expressed the possibility of Sudan returning to IGAD in his message, emphasizing IGAD countries’ ability to overcome challenges. The two leaders agreed to study the matter.
Djibouti’s Foreign Minister explained that his country is closely monitoring the situation in Sudan, expressing regret for the suffering caused by the ongoing war. He noted the violations committed by the rebel forces against civilians, while also affirming that the signs of victory for the armed forces are becoming evident and that Sudan will soon return stronger to its regional position within IGAD, being a founding member of the organization.
The envoy also highlighted the growing relations between Sudan and Djibouti, stating that Sudan plays a significant and pivotal role. He added that as the chair of IGAD, President Guelleh sent the message to encourage Sudan’s return as an influential IGAD member. He also congratulated the Sudanese people on the military’s victory and the restoration of control over the situation.
