Appointment of Rashad as New Head of Egypt’s General Intelligence

The Egyptian presidency announced yesterday the appointment of Hassan Mahmoud Rashad as the new head of the General Intelligence Service, succeeding Major General Abbas Kamel, who had led the agency since 2018. Rashad, who previously held the position of deputy director of the intelligence service, was sworn in before President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Rashad graduated from the Military Technical College, which supplies the army with engineers, and rose through the ranks within the General Intelligence Service. Kamel has been appointed as an advisor, envoy for the president, and coordinator of security agencies.
A security source informed Asharq Al-Awsat that the change is a “very natural move,” explaining that “the decision suggests a new approach to the work of security agencies and their coordination, an approach adopted in some countries.”
