Syrian-Russian Measures to Avoid Opening the “Golan Front”

Moscow pushes for an “Astana” meeting before the end of the year.
Damascus has restricted the movements of its “friends” from Iranian militias and Hezbollah in Lebanon, fearing a drag into a war with Israel in the occupied Golan, by issuing strict military orders in agreement with the Russians.
Following Damascus’s move to limit activities in the area near the Golan, it expanded these restrictions to include the Damascus countryside, Homs, and the Homs desert, areas from which drones could launch towards the occupied Golan and into Israel, according to a report by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
As the likelihood of Israel’s war against Hezbollah in Lebanon expanding to Syria increases, Damascus seeks to avoid this conflict. Moscow has revived talks about advancing the “Astana Process” for a political solution to the Syrian situation, pushing for a new meeting.
