The Humanitarian Research Lab at Yale University has revealed a significant expansion in cemetery sites in the eastern region of Al-Jazeera state, confirming the perpetration of mass atrocities against civilians by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
According to a report by Yale’s Humanitarian Research Lab, as reported by Sudan Tribune, “significant expansion has been identified at burial sites in areas such as Al-Sarihah, Rufaa, and Abu Jalfa between September 29 and October 31, 2024, with evidence consistent with body disposal in Tambul during the same period.”
The report confirms that this expansion and available evidence reinforce reports of large-scale atrocities committed by the RSF against civilians and their communities in Al-Jazeera state. It further highlights that the RSF has looted and destroyed markets and medical facilities in Tambul and Al-Shorfa, in addition to deliberately burning agricultural fields.
The lab noted that satellite image analysis of two cemeteries in Rufaa shows a rapid increase in ground disturbances, consistent with burial mounds, when compared to archived images. It stated that the first cemetery shows an increase of around 80 mounds between July 5 and October 31, 2024, while the total area of the second cemetery expanded from approximately 660 square meters to around 1,000 square meters between September 29 and October 31, 2024.
