Burhan: A Plan to Adapt to Climate Change Despite Environmental Damage from the War

Sudan Events – Follow-ups
The Chairman of the Sovereign Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, announced that Sudan is preparing a plan to adapt to climate change, despite the environmental damage caused by the practices of war.
Burhan spoke on Tuesday at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in the presence of several heads of state and government.
In his speech at the conference, Burhan stated, “The environment in Sudan has suffered double damage; in addition to climate change, practices resulting from the war, such as increased deforestation, abandonment of agricultural land, and increased pollution due to the destruction of infrastructure, have contributed to this harm.”
He added, “Despite this, we have initiated the preparation of a national plan that includes projects for adapting to climate changes within the framework of development. We have also implemented several policies and measures, including plans and programs to increase reliance on alternative and renewable energy sources.”
