The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has warned that the armed violence in Gezira State, near Khartoum, is putting the lives of tens of thousands of people at risk.
Last week, OCHA conducted assessments in the two states. Many of the displaced people reported walking for days on foot to escape the violence, arriving with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. Many are now living in the open, including children, women, the elderly, and the sick.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric stated that those fleeing the fighting in Gezira urgently need tents, plastic sheeting, mattresses, medicines, food, and milk for young children. OCHA has also noted an increase in cholera cases at the cholera treatment center in Gedaref following the recent wave of displacement.
Regarding developments in Darfur, Dujarric said at his daily press conference, “Following the Sudanese government’s decision to keep the Adre crossing (from Chad) open, which was welcomed by the Secretary-General, the World Food Program reported that three convoys carrying food and nutritional aid are heading for the Zamzam refugee camp in North Darfur, as well as Kadugli in South Kordofan, for the first time in months.”
