Western Envoy Calls for Punishment of ‘Al-Jazirah Atrocities’ Perpetrators During Meeting with Burhan

Norway’s Special Envoy to Sudan, Andrea Stiansen, condemned the crimes and atrocities committed in Al-Jazirah State and other areas, calling for holding the perpetrators accountable.
On Wednesday, the envoy met with Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Chairman and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, in the presence of Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Omar Issa.
Ambassador Omar Issa described the meeting as positive, noting that it addressed several issues, including humanitarian aid and facilitating its delivery to Sudan, as well as developments in the political process.
Issa stated that the Sovereignty Council Chairman had reaffirmed the government’s commitment to facilitating the work of all organizations and countries providing humanitarian aid to Sudan. Al-Burhan also directed all relevant authorities to streamline and activate necessary procedures to support this effort.
The meeting also touched on the progress of the political process, with some proposals being presented. The Norwegian envoy is on his second visit to Sudan and plans to hold further discussions with Sudanese officials.
The Norwegian envoy characterized the meeting as constructive and productive, discussing various topics related to humanitarian assistance and the ongoing political process. He reiterated Norway’s interest in the humanitarian situation and its commitment to supporting and providing aid to the Sudanese people.
“We have proposed measures to help facilitate humanitarian assistance,” the envoy said.
He also expressed appreciation for the Sudanese government’s initiative to open the Adré border crossing to facilitate aid delivery, describing it as a significant step.
The envoy condemned the atrocities committed in Al-Jazirah State and other regions, particularly denouncing violations against women and children. He emphasized that the killing of innocent civilians constitutes a blatant violation of international and human rights laws and called for holding the perpetrators accountable.
