Nine People Killed in Congo by Extremists Linked to ISIS

Congolese authorities announced on Wednesday that extremist rebels affiliated with ISIS had killed at least nine people, including an eight-month-old baby and a 14-year-old girl, in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. They also abducted others, according to a report by the German News Agency.

The rebels, members of the Allied Democratic Forces, attacked civilians in the village of Tienambo in North Kivu province on Tuesday evening, said Colonel Mak Hazoukai, a spokesperson for the Congolese army. He urged residents to be cautious and avoid isolated areas.

Jean de Campali Kibuana, Deputy Mayor of the town of Usha, told local media that the attackers also set fire to homes in the village and abducted three people.

Eastern Congo has witnessed armed violence for decades, with over 120 armed groups fighting for power, land, and valuable mineral resources, while others try to defend their communities.

In recent years, the Allied Democratic Forces’ attacks have become more brutal, extending towards Goma, the main city in eastern Congo, as well as the nearby Ituri province.

Human rights organizations and the United Nations have accused the Allied Democratic Forces of killing hundreds of people and abducting many more, including a significant number of children.

In August, local media reported that the Allied Democratic Forces had killed at least 12 people in several villages in North Kivu.
