UN Arranges Indirect Talks Between Army and Militia in Geneva

Sudan Events – Agencies

Sources told the London-based Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that the UN envoy to Sudan, Ramtan Lamamra, has started arranging invitations for both sides of the Sudanese conflict – the army and the “Rapid Support Forces” – to resume indirect talks in Geneva, Switzerland, next January. The talks will focus on the issue of protecting civilians.

The “Allies for Saving Lives and Achieving Peace in Sudan” group has been involved in new consultations with Sudanese civil society actors, including women, youth, and organizations, to gather their views and include them in the upcoming talks agenda.

According to the sources, the UN official stated that the “Rapid Support Forces” have agreed to resume talks, while the army has shown preliminary consent to participate, although no official confirmation has been made yet.

The UN envoy, Lamamra, will personally lead the discussions between both parties to reach a binding agreement on civilian protection, which could pave the way for further understandings on other issues related to hostilities.
