Disputes Between Traders and Citizens Over 500 and 1000 Pound Bills
Sudan Events – Rehab Abdullah
With December 23 being the final deadline for currency exchange in targeted states, most traders in the Shendi locality and other states have refused to accept old bills of 500 and 1000 pounds, claiming that they are no longer valid.
This has led to arguments between citizens and traders, resulting in some stores closing their doors following protests from the public.
Abdelrahman Mohamed Abdelrahman, head of the Currency Exchange Operations and Follow-up Committee at the Central Bank of Sudan, told Al-Ahdath that, based on previous exchange experiences, this issue is expected as the end of the exchange period approaches.
