94 Killed Due to Cyclone “Chedo” in Mozambique
According to AFP on Sunday, citing the Mozambique Disaster Management Agency, the death toll from Cyclone “Chedo” in the country has risen to 94.
The cyclone made landfall in northern Mozambique a week ago, and the country’s National Disaster Institute announced on Thursday that the death toll had reached 73.
The Comoros Archipelago in the Indian Ocean bore the brunt of the storm. Officials in Mayotte, one of the poorest overseas territories of France, confirmed the deaths of 35 people due to the cyclone, though some feared that thousands may have died there.
Olamide Harrison, the IMF resident representative in Mozambique, said on Wednesday that the country’s economic growth forecast for 2024 will likely be revised downward from the previously estimated 4.3% due to the impact of the cyclone and post-election disruptions.
