Al-Burhan Calls on the International Community to Deter Countries Supporting Militias

On Monday, the Chairman of the Transitional Sovereign Council, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, met with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Ramtane Lamamra, in the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Ali Youssef.
Al-Burhan confirmed Sudan’s commitment to working jointly with the United Nations and forming a shared vision for future cooperation in all areas, noting Sudan’s commitment to protecting civilians from the brutality of the rogue Janjaweed militia. He called on the UN and the international community to exert pressure on the rebel militia and condemn the violations they commit with greater rigor and clarity.
During the meeting, the Sovereign Council Chairman emphasized the need for the international system to take decisive and deterrent action against the countries supporting the rebels. He also called for necessary measures to be taken by the UN system regarding the non-implementation of UN Security Council resolutions concerning the cessation of arms shipments to Darfur and the halting of attacks on the city of Al-Fasher.
Al-Burhan stated that when citizens return to their homes and villages, the political process will be initiated, and elections will be held in which the Sudanese people will decide their political future without external interference.
For his part, Lamamra, in a press statement, conveyed the greetings of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to the Chairman of the Sovereign Council. He noted that the meeting discussed the situation in Sudan, highlighting the UN’s involvement and encouragement of a negotiated solution to the Sudanese crisis. He stressed the need for concerted efforts to help the Sudanese people overcome this crisis, speed up the return to normalcy, and focus on rebuilding and reconstruction efforts.
The UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy added that the war has lasted nearly two years, resulting in numerous casualties, and that the UN is working diligently to shorten the duration of the conflict and reduce its casualties. He confirmed the UN’s readiness for further cooperation with Sudan to find a solution to the crisis and end the suffering of the Sudanese people.
