21 People Killed in Mozambique in Riots After Supreme Court Decision on Elections
Mozambique’s Interior Minister stated on Tuesday evening that at least 21 people were killed in riots that erupted after the Supreme Court approved the victory of the long-ruling Frelimo party in the elections on Monday, according to Reuters.
The Constitutional Council’s decision prompted opposition groups and their supporters to organize new protests nationwide, alleging electoral fraud.
Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda told the state-run TVM channel that 78 people have been arrested so far, and security measures have been heightened across the country. He added, “The armed forces and defense forces will increase their presence in key and strategic points.”
Opposition groups and election monitors have accused Frelimo of electoral fraud, which the party denies.
