Trump Affirms “Complete and Unwavering” Support for House Speaker Mike Johnson
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump reaffirmed his “complete and unwavering” support for House Speaker Mike Johnson on Monday, as Johnson is set to run for re-election this week amid a slim Republican majority in the House.
Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social: “Speaker Mike Johnson is a good, diligent, and religious man. He will do the right thing, and we will continue to win. My full and complete endorsement of Mike.”
The House of Representatives is set to elect a new speaker on Friday after the new Congress takes the oath of office. Trump’s support is crucial to Johnson’s hopes of retaining the position, which he assumed in October 2023, according to Reuters.
Republicans hold a 219-215 majority in the House, meaning the vote depends on the GOP maintaining its unity.
Due to the slim Republican majority, if just two members vote for another candidate other than Johnson, it could derail his attempt to stay in the speaker’s position.
