US Security Assistance Package for Kyiv Worth $2.5 Billion
On Monday, Washington announced a $2.5 billion security assistance package for Kyiv, as the Biden administration seeks to provide Ukraine with as much support as possible before Donald Trump is inaugurated as president next month. Russia, on the other hand, has stated its opposition to the deployment of Western peacekeeping forces in Ukraine as part of any settlement to end the ongoing conflict, which has lasted for nearly three years.
Trump’s victory in the November election raised concerns about the future of US support for Ukraine, leaving a narrow window to spend the billions of dollars in aid approved before the Republican returns to the White House on January 20.
The announced package includes military assistance worth $1.25 billion, which allows the Pentagon to take weapons from US stockpiles and send them quickly to the battlefield. An additional $1.22 billion will be funded through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which is used to purchase military equipment from partners or companies in the defense industry. President Biden announced in a statement, “We are providing approximately $2.5 billion in security assistance to Ukraine as the Ukrainian people continue to defend their independence and freedom against Russian aggression.”
