The American newspaper The New York Times published evidence supported by video clips, collected by its visual investigations team, documenting atrocities allegedly committed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia in Sudan over the past year since the outbreak of war between it and the Sudanese army on April 15, 2023.
The visual evidence, which the newspaper gathered and analyzed over several months, revealed the identities of RSF leaders whose soldiers committed “atrocities” under their watch across Sudan.
The investigative report, supported by video footage, enabled the identification of ten RSF leaders overseeing possible war crimes and pinpointed the locations of several other operations. The report also noted that the militia’s top leader, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti, may bear full responsibility.
While the United Nations has accused both sides of committing violations, the New York Times investigation, conducted over six months, showed that the RSF was perpetrating “systematic atrocities across Sudan,” including ethnic cleansing often carried out in full view of its leaders.
