Proposed Amendments to the Constitutional Document Grant Broad Powers to Burhan

Sudan Events – Agencies
Informed sources have revealed to “Sudan Tribune” that proposed amendments to the constitutional document would grant the Chairman of the Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, broad powers, including the authority to appoint and dismiss the Prime Minister, as well as an increase in the number of council members.
According to the sources, the proposed amendments stipulate that the total number of Sovereignty Council members would become nine, three representing the parties to the Juba Peace Agreement, and six appointed by Burhan.
A source who participated in the political forces meeting told “Sudan Tribune” that the Juba Peace Agreement signatories would retain their share but would lose the right to select their ministerial portfolios, as was previously the case. He added that the validity of the amended document would be 39 months starting from the date of signing.
The amendments also include granting regional and state governors membership in the Council of Ministers while allowing the Prime Minister full authority to appoint their government from national experts without affecting the share of the Juba Agreement parties.
