Weapons Seized on Their Way to al-Shabaab in Central South Somalia

The Somali National Army seized a vehicle loaded with weapons en route to “Al-Shabaab militants” in the Hiran province of central South Somalia. According to the Somali News Agency (SONA) on Sunday, this happened during a military operation carried out by the national army in collaboration with local resistance fighters in the outskirts of the Bartiri area in Hiran.

Colonel Mahmoud Hassan Ibrahim, commander of the 5th battalion of the Somali National Army, confirmed that the army had received intelligence about the vehicle carrying weapons for the “militants” and successfully intercepted it.

He praised the vigilance of the army forces in preventing the weapons from reaching the terrorists, adding that “the national army is prepared to confront terrorist schemes.”

In Somalia, the term “militants” is often used to refer to the al-Shabaab group, which carries out attacks aimed at overthrowing the Somali government to take power and enforce strict interpretations of Sharia law.
