Sudan Events – Reports
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the statements made by the Foreign Minister of South Sudan in New York, in which he called for UN and African Union intervention in Sudan.
In a statement, the ministry described the move as unjustified, especially given that despite forming a fact-finding committee after recent events in Al-Jazeera state, South Sudan’s Juba city and other areas have witnessed retaliatory campaigns. These campaigns included killings, physical assaults, and looting targeting innocent Sudanese citizens, allegedly incited by official South Sudanese figures. Even the Sudanese embassy in Juba and its staff were not spared, constituting a severe breach of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and all international laws and norms.
The ministry emphasized that Sudan’s government has exercised great patience regarding the numerous violations by South Sudan out of its commitment to the bonds of neighborly relations and the historical ties between the two peoples.
The statement added that although the participation of South Sudanese mercenaries alongside rebel militias has been well-documented and reported to Juba’s government, no measures have been taken to stop the recruitment and deployment of these mercenaries against the Sudanese state and its people. Instead, South Sudan has continued to provide various forms of support to the rebel militias, including transporting and treating militia members in South Sudanese hospitals.
The ministry also highlighted South Sudan’s grave violations in Abyei, contravening agreements regarding the region’s status. Reports from the UNISFA mission have documented these violations in submissions to the UN Secretary-General.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed its commitment to taking appropriate measures in international and regional forums to respond to South Sudan’s numerous violations. It also emphasized Sudan’s determination to protect its rights and its citizens’ rights as guaranteed by international laws and treaties.
