Foreign Minister: Kenya’s Stance Has Changed, and Ruto Will Not Recognize a Government-in-Exile

Sudan Events – Agencies

Foreign Minister Ali Youssef confirmed that Kenya’s position toward Sudan has significantly shifted in recent times.

Speaking to the “Al-Mohaqiq” news website, Youssef stated that Nairobi has reconsidered its stance on Sudan due to new developments in the ongoing war. He added that the Sudanese army is currently advancing strongly on all battlefronts, while the militia forces are facing defeat. Youssef noted that the idea of the Rapid Support Forces taking control of power in Sudan is no longer viable for Kenyan President William Ruto. He further explained that Ruto is keen to play a prominent African role, adding that the Kenyan president is scheduled to make an official visit to Egypt next week.

The Foreign Minister revealed that meetings are being held in Nairobi on Sunday to discuss reconsidering sanctions imposed on African nations that have experienced so-called unconstitutional changes in government. He added that Ruto believes such countries facing crises should not have their African Union membership frozen. Youssef described this perspective as significant and said it aligns with efforts to lift Sudan’s suspension from the African Union.

He pointed to the upcoming African Union Peace and Security Council summit-level meetings, which will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 14. Youssef stated that Sudan’s return to the African Union will be discussed during Sunday’s Nairobi meetings and at the Peace and Security Council meetings, expressing optimism that this could lead to lifting Sudan’s suspension at the next African summit, scheduled one day after the council meeting.

The Foreign Minister also disclosed that President Ruto assured him Kenya would not recognize any government-in-exile in Sudan or any other African country, emphasizing that this is a firm position for Kenya.
