Guterres: Perpetrators of Severe Violations in Sudan Must Be Held Accountable

Sudan Events – Follow-ups

UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the attack on the Saudi Teaching Hospital in El Fasher, North Darfur, which reportedly killed at least 70 patients and their relatives and injured dozens.

In a statement issued by UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, it was noted that this horrific attack, targeting the only operational hospital in Darfur’s largest city, comes after more than 21 months of war that has severely damaged healthcare in Sudan.

Guterres reiterated the need to respect and protect patients, the injured, healthcare workers, and medical facilities at all times in accordance with international humanitarian law. He stressed that those responsible for severe violations of international humanitarian law must be held accountable, as deliberately targeting healthcare facilities could constitute a war crime.

He renewed his call for the parties to immediately cease fighting and take steps toward lasting peace, as demanded by the Sudanese people.
