Tensions in Congo After Advances by “Rwanda-Backed” Rebels

Tensions have reignited in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where protesters attacked several foreign embassies in the capital, Kinshasa, on Tuesday. The demonstrations were in response to advances made by the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels, who are said to be “backed by Rwanda,” towards the key eastern city of Goma.

Police fired tear gas at protesters as they marched toward diplomatic missions of various countries, setting some buildings on fire in outrage over what they called foreign interference. Reports also emerged that the rebels had seized Goma’s airport.

The European Union condemned the attacks on embassies in Kinshasa, while the African Union denounced the violence in eastern Congo and urged the M23 rebels to lay down their arms.

Meanwhile, the South African military announced that four of its soldiers participating in peacekeeping efforts in the DRC were killed, bringing the total number of casualties among South Africa’s regional force and the UN mission (MONUSCO) to 17, following recent clashes between the Congolese army and the M23 rebels.
