In an interview with Fox News, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Ukraine needs broader security guarantees and that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not afraid of Europe. He urged U.S. President Donald Trump to stand by Ukraine.
Trump, who took office on January 20, has pledged to end the war between Russia and Ukraine quickly but has not specified how he plans to achieve this. His aides have indicated that reaching a settlement could take months. Unlike former Democratic President Joe Biden’s administration, which avoided engaging with Putin, Trump has expressed willingness to negotiate with the Russian leader, according to Reuters.
Trump’s victory in the November election raised hopes for a diplomatic resolution to Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022. However, it also sparked concerns in Kyiv that a swift peace deal could come at Ukraine’s expense.
Zelensky stated, “We want him (Trump) to be on the side of justice, on the side of Ukraine. Putin is not afraid of Europe.”
He added that Ukraine cannot accept Russian occupation but prefers a diplomatic resolution.
