Melrose Meeting: American Fischer Breaks 3000m Record

American runner Grant Fisher shattered the world record for the indoor 3000m race, clocking in at 7:22.91 minutes, at the Melrose Track and Field Meeting in New York.
Fisher, who won the bronze medal in the 5000m and 10,000m at the Paris Olympics, executed an excellent strategy that allowed him to overtake Cole Hocker, the 1500m gold medalist in Paris, on the final lap, breaking the previous world record held by Ethiopian runner Lamesha Girma (7:23.81 minutes in 2023).
The crowd at the Armory Stadium cheered for the 27-year-old Fischer as he accumulated fast laps before the decisive acceleration at the final turn, followed by a sprint to the finish line.
It appeared that Hocker was in control of the race, as the 23-year-old surged ahead three laps before the finish, but he couldn’t withstand Fischer’s return, who took the win, breaking the record in the process.
Fischer said shortly after crossing the finish line: “It was a long battle. It will stay in the memory.”
He added, “Cole is in his best shape now, so he is a strong competitor. I am very happy that I overcame him.”
