Sudan: Strengthening Preventive Measures Against Ebola

The weekly meeting of the Federal Emergency Operations Centers was held at the Public Health Laboratory in Kassala, reviewing the country’s health situation amid outbreaks of cholera and dengue fever, as well as ongoing containment efforts.

The epidemiological report on cholera recorded 17 new cases, including one death, bringing the total number of cases across 83 localities in 12 states to 53,317, with 1,425 deaths. The report highlighted that White Nile (Kosti, Rabak) and Blue Nile states continue to report new cases, while several other states have seen no cases for over two weeks.

Regarding dengue fever, the report confirmed three new cases, all in Kassala State, with no new deaths. This brings the total number of dengue cases across 37 localities in nine states to 10,844, with 16 deaths recorded.

The report also provided updates on Ebola in Uganda, noting that Sudanese authorities are monitoring arrivals from Uganda. A total of 111 people entered Sudan from Uganda, including 98 Sudanese nationals, with 22 individuals under follow-up monitoring.

The report on cholera containment measures confirmed ongoing federal-level monitoring of isolation centers, though several challenges remain. The environmental health and food safety report highlighted numerous intervention efforts across different sectors.

The health promotion report emphasized the continuation of awareness activities, including household visits, community dialogues, media messaging, and social media campaigns, alongside interventions in quarantine and isolation centers and training for health promoters.

The quarantine report noted that 12,985 individuals entered Sudan in the past week, while 9,308 left the country. Meanwhile, 914 individuals sought medical attention at border health facilities and entry points. Additionally, 26 flights from Juba have evacuated 4,200 individuals to Sudan.

The meeting directed authorities to closely monitor the situation in Uganda following confirmed Ebola cases and to focus on White Nile and Blue Nile states for cholera containment efforts.
