Sudan’s ambassador to Russia, Mohamed Al-Ghazali Al-Tijani, described the visit of Foreign Minister Ambassador Ali Youssef to Moscow on Tuesday as significant for both countries.
According to Al-Muhaqiq news website, Al-Ghazali stated that the visit is evidence of the development of relations between the two nations based on mutual political will. He added that it laid the groundwork for practical steps to enhance relations, including the resumption of the joint ministerial committee’s work in the near future. He also noted that the visit fostered understandings on mutual support and coordination in international forums.
The Sudanese ambassador in Moscow addressed reports about an agreement to establish a Russian military base on the Red Sea in Sudan, clarifying that it is the same old agreement, referred to as a logistical and material support point on the Red Sea. He explained that the agreement exists and is viewed by both countries within the context of their evolving bilateral relations, as long as it serves their mutual interests.
Ambassador Al-Ghazali also stated that Russia has expressed interest in participating, through both the public and private sectors, in Sudan’s reconstruction plans following the massive destruction inflicted on infrastructure by the systematic actions of the Al-Dagalo militia. He emphasized that Russia possesses significant capabilities, while Sudan is rich in resources, and that Russia is expected to contribute in key sectors such as energy, oil, and minerals. He added that the groundwork has already begun in the government sector and that the joint ministerial committee between the two countries is set to convene in Port Sudan very soon, with the participation of major public and private companies with sufficient expertise in these fields.
Al-Ghazali stressed that Sudan builds its relationships on mutual interest and fair cooperation without exploitation, saying, “We see that Russia adheres to this approach in managing its foreign economic relations.” He added, “We are open to any country, whether Western or otherwise, that respects these principles in its dealings.” He further stated that “Russia has stood by Sudan and supported it significantly during this crisis,” highlighting that Russia’s understanding of Sudan’s situation places it among the priority countries for investment and partnerships in various sectors.
He also mentioned that during his visit to Moscow, the Sudanese foreign minister met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, as well as the Minister of Natural Resources, who heads the Russian side of the joint ministerial committee. He also met with the head of the Foreign Relations Council in the Russian Duma.
Al-Ghazali further revealed that Foreign Minister Ali Youssef will travel from Russia to Germany on Wednesday evening to attend the Munich Security Conference, which is scheduled to take place on Friday, February 14.
