Sudan Events – Reports
On Tuesday, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) announced that 221 cases of child rape were recorded in Sudan during the past year, 2024.
In a report, UNICEF confirmed that armed men are raping and sexually assaulting children, including infants as young as one year old, amidst the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The organization stated that data collected by service providers assisting survivors of gender-based violence in Sudan reveal a harrowing picture of the crisis facing children.
The report added, “Among the 221 children who reported being raped, 147 were girls, accounting for 66% of the cases. Meanwhile, the fact that 33% of survivors were boys is also significant.”
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell said, “The rape of one-year-old children by armed men is an atrocity that should shake every human being and compel immediate action. Millions of children in Sudan are at risk of rape and other forms of sexual violence, which is being used as a tactic of war. This is a horrific violation of international law and may amount to a war crime. It must stop.”
