Kenyan authorities arrested Yasir Arman, the leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement – Democratic Revolutionary Current, on Wednesday shortly after his arrival at Nairobi Airport. His arrest was based on an arrest warrant issued by Sudanese authorities and transmitted via Interpol.
In late September 2024, Sudan’s Attorney General, Al-Fateh Taifour, announced that arrest warrants had been issued for leaders of the Coordination of Democratic Civilian Forces (Taqaddum), accusing them of colluding with the RSF in the ongoing war since April 15, 2023. He added that Interpol would be requested to arrest them.
Sudan Tribune learned that Kenyan police detained Arman upon his arrival at the airport and informed him of the arrest warrant issued by Interpol’s Nairobi office. He was then held at a hotel in Nairobi while authorities investigated the seriousness of the request and whether it was criminal or political in nature.
Sources indicate that Arman was transferred to the hotel after making contacts with certain entities that reached out to Interpol’s Nairobi office.
Sudan Tribune has reviewed a letter from Sudan’s Public Prosecution requesting Arman’s extradition to Sudan for investigation over alleged violations of Sudanese law and international humanitarian law.
Arman had traveled to Kenya for meetings with Western diplomats to discuss Sudan’s ongoing situation as part of regional engagements by Sudanese civilian forces.
