IGAD Welcomes Appointment of Kamal Idris as Prime Minister

The Executive Secretary of IGAD, Workneh Gebeyehu, stated that he had been informed of the appointment of Dr. Kamal El-Tayeb Idris as Prime Minister of the Republic of Sudan by the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan.

In a statement, Gebeyehu expressed his hope that “this appointment represents a meaningful step towards reviving an inclusive political process,” and urged “all concerned Sudanese parties to participate in broad-based national consultations aimed at restoring constitutional governance, achieving peace, and laying the foundation for a stable and democratic Sudan.”

The statement reiterated IGAD’s call for “an immediate and unconditional ceasefire,” emphasizing that silencing the guns is essential to ending civilian suffering, enabling humanitarian access, and creating an environment conducive to dialogue.

The statement affirmed IGAD’s continued commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and stability, and its readiness to support efforts toward a peaceful, democratic, and sustainable future.
