Foreign Ministry Denies U.S. Allegations Against Armed Forces

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs categorically denied the unfounded allegations made in the U.S. State Department’s statement yesterday, which claimed that the Sudanese army had used chemical weapons in its defense against aggression and invasion.

In an official press release today, the ministry condemned the measures announced by the U.S. administration, declaring its intention to take action against Sudan based on these false claims.

The ministry expressed its astonishment at the approach taken by the U.S. administration, which began months ago with anonymous leaks to the U.S. press containing these allegations. The administration avoided presenting them through the proper international mechanism—the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) in The Hague, to which both countries belong. Sudan, in fact, holds a seat on the OPCW Executive Council.

The statement referenced the Chemical Weapons Convention, which both nations have signed, and which specifies procedures for handling such claims and concerns. The United States did not take the necessary initial step of notifying the OPCW, despite its claim that the alleged use occurred last year.

The ministry emphasized that Sudan fulfills its obligations under the convention, including routine declarations and a commitment not to produce, store, or use chemical weapons. It further asserted that Sudan will not accept unilateral actions that violate the Chemical Weapons Convention, especially from a party with a history of using false allegations to threaten the sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity of other nations.
